“This is probably Europe’s last undeveloped coastline and when you add to that three of Europe’s finest golf courses, an area steeped in history and outstanding natural beauty, you have a product that is going to challenge the traditional destinations,” comments Seth Underwood, chairman of the Bulgarian Golf Association.
The Lighthouse Golf Resort & Spa opened in September 2008. Its course was designed by former European Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam. Nestled on a cliff overlooking the Black Sea’s clear waters, golf does not get any more breathtaking than here. Challenging, yet generous, the 6,790- yards, par 71 Lighthouse Golf Course offers beginners as well as the experienced player a chance to test their skills, with some of the best and most challenging greens in Europe. The classic clubhouse is one of the resort’s main features with its beautiful interior and large balconies overlooking the 1st and 18th holes. The Lighthouse is the area’s biggest project. The five-star Osiris Hotel, a central landmark of the resort, is set for completion in 2011. The Lighthouse Resort has been designed around five main hamlets, and facilities will eventually include a spa, casino, tennis courts, aqua park, private beach, shops, and villas and apartments all with high-speed internet access.
Lighthouse Golf Resort opened in 2004 and is the work of Ian Woosnam and European Golf Design. The finishing three holes are a great challenge; the 16th is a true par 5 with water in play before a sloping green, the 17th a shortish par 3 back over the lake, and the 18th a memorable par 4 with water down the right. Next door is the Gary Player-designed BlackSeaRama, which opened in 2008. The panoramic views of Varna Bay are particularly special, as is the signature 18th. Hit it right off the elevated tee and your ball will topple down the cliff.
The Golf COURSE Ian Woosnam is not only one of the worlds greatest and most experienced golfers, but has also proven his exemplary design talent on a range of new courses around the world.
The most recent of these projects in association with European Golf Design (EGD), is The Lighthouse course and will be the championship golfer’s first project in Bulgaria. The prestigious golf course is a links style course combined with traditional design and will become the signature feature of one of Europe’s premiere sport, leisure and holiday resorts. The ideal temperate climate is perfectly suited to the lush landscape of the course and the aficionado or enthusiast who takes to the fairways here.
Bulgaria is a fascinating blend of history, at the crossroads between Asia and Europe, a land cultivated since the dawn of civilization. It is a land of mountains, the Danube River and the Black Sea.
The Lighthouse Golf Resort course was designed by Ian Woosnam, and was the first we played on the visit to sample golf in the Balkans. This is a layout of over 6000 metres from the back tees, but with four choices, there is an option for all standards of player. The views from the cliff tops are spectacular, and as the sun begins to set, the sea is like a silver carpet.

Working along the coast from south to north, you progress from the oldest to the newest and make your way steadily upmarket. Ex-US Masters champion Ian Woosnam put his name to the course at the Lighthouse Golf Resort and although it’s been open for a while, the eponymous lighthouse has yet to be built and a large on-site hotel is not quite finished. Both have been delayed by the recession.
